Ponte Preta vs Avai – Estsdio Moises Lucarelli at 11:30
Just two points separate these sides as we head into round 18 of the Serie A season. Ponte Preta will be looking to pick up three points that would potentially fire them into 9th achieving the clubs aim for the season.
After their promotion to the Brazilian top flight last season, Avai have found it difficult to get any real momentum going in the league and they find themselves just one place outside the relegation zone. Serie A is a lot more unforgiving than Brazil’s second division where the Avai defence would get away with some of the mistakes they’ve made in recent weeks.
The blue and white of Avai have struggled on the road in the opening half of this season, they’ve only picked up two points from the last five away games scoring just two goals. With just 17 goals to their name in 17 games, it’s easy to see why Avai have struggled so much.
Andre Lima is currently Avai’s top goalscorer with four goals from his 13 games and although it’s a respectable tally by the ex Beijing forward, he’s actually only got 10+ goals in a season once in his career which happened back in 2010 when he netted 11 times for Gremio as they achieved a top four finish in Serie A.
After a very positive start to the season, Ponte Preta hit a rough patch and it seemed like they’d struggle to drag themselves out of it, but with their latest win at home to Flamengo it has put the Sao Paulo based side back into the top half again.
With just 18 goals to their name so far Ponte are missing an out and out goalscorer that would fire them into being a potential top four side. With two back to back home clean sheets Ponte will fancy their chances of picking up a third home clean sheet against an Avai side that struggle for goals.
I fancy Ponte Preta to pick up three points which will fire them into 9th place in Brazil’s top flight.
