Asian Handicap Betting Preview Ponte Preta v Corinthians at 20:00
With the Olympic games of 2016 now over with we can finally switch our focus back to the biggest league in South America the Brazilian Serie A.
On Saturday evening we’ll be taking a look at the local derby in the state of Sao Paulo where Ponte Preta will host title contenders Corinthians kick off 8pm GMT.
After a very slow start to the Paulista championship campaign in which Ponte Preta sat bottom of their group after five games, the club slowly started to pull together and adopt a new hard working high press approach to the game.
Having lost their star talent from the previous season in Biro Biro to the Chinese second division, along with other players drifting out of the club this was supposed to be a “transitional season” for Ponte Preta
After this poor start to the campaign manager E.Baptista started to get his side pressing high up the pitch, as they didn’t have the defensive capabilities to shut teams out and defend for large periods of time.
His idea was to literally win the ball as high up the pitch as possible keeping the ball away from his inadequate defence and in turn giving some of his more capable players like W.Pottker the opportunity to cause problems deep in the oppositions territory.
During the week Ponte travelled to Belo Horizonte as they faced an in form Atletico MG side in the last 16 of the Copa do brasil. With the top four in Serie A being so competitive this season the Copa do brasil offers a real opportunity for the club to qualify for the Copa Libertedores by winning the domestic cup.
Their first leg ended in a 1-1 draw as Roger gave the away side the lead just before the break before ex Real Madrid forward Robinho levelled the scoring for MG, the only dark spot on the Ponte performance was the sending off of Douglas Grolli in stoppage time.
The Corinthians faithful were virtually ripping their hair out last Sunday when they fell to an embarrassing 3-0 defeat away to Gremio, the scoreline was bad enough but the fact Gremio hit the post twice and missed two one on ones meant that Corinthians went away feeling almost thankful that they’d got off lightly.
Luckily for the Timao they had the opportunity to put things right almsot instantly with a home game against Vitoria on Tuesday evening, after falling behind on the stroke of half time courtesy of a Yago own goal it was Corinthians who rallied in the second half and showed their title credentials as they came from behind to grab a 2-1 win.
I’m not really sure why the draw is as short as it is in this game (2.89 at time of writing) as both these sides have drew just four games each in their 21 league fixtures, Corinthians will be tough to break down and they recycle possession really well which should make it tough for the home side to steal the ball in the Corinthians final third. We’ll be backing Corinthians to grab the three points on the Asian Handicap market.
