Formative Years and Football Career:
Joe Gomez started his football career by joining the academy at nearby Charlton Athletic at the age of 10. He made his debut for the club’s under-18 team at just 13 years old. His impressive skills in football caught the strong interests of other clubs. Despite this, Gomez signed his first pro contract with Charlton Athletic in 2014.
His senior debut for the team was in a 4-0 League Cup victory against Colchester United in the same year, playing a full 90-minute fixture as the right-back. The following week, he made his league debut in a 3-2 victory over Derby County in the championship tournament. He went on to make 24 appearances during his first season, which included 18 starts, both as right-back, and in his preferred position as centre-back.
Gomez represented England at the under-16, under-17, and under-19 levels. He was one of the key players of the English national team who helped secure the victory during the 2014 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Under-17 Championship, playing every minute of England’s five matches. He was also named in UEFA’s Team of the Tournament.
In 2015, the young defender was called up to join England’s Under-21 squad. He was announced as England U21’s captain in 2017. As of now, he plays as a Defender for both Liverpool and the English national team.
Gomez stayed in Charlton for a whole season before signing with Liverpool on a five-year contract in 2015. He made his debut against Stoke City, playing as a left-back in a 1-0 win, assisting Philippe Coutinho’s match-winning goal in the 86th minute. While playing for England’s U-21, he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury the same year. He only returned to training a year later, and played only in closed doors scrimmages. He returned in 2017, making his official start in the first-team match since the injury in a Football Association (FA) Cup tie against Plymouth Argyle.
In the 2017-18 season, Gomez made his European debut in a 4-2 win against Hoffenheim in the UEFA Champions League play-offs. In 2018, Gomez suffered an ankle injury and had to go through surgery, missing the last fixtures of the season including the 2018 UEFA Champions League final.
Just recently, Gomez played as the centre-back in Liverpool’s first game of the season where he was lauded for his impressive performances, receiving the Man of the Match award.The promising youngster already attracted the attention of several Premier League clubs. At just a young age, Joe Gomez has become one of Liverpool’s most important players.
