Edin Dzeko started his football career at Bosnian football club Zaljeznicar. He played as a midfielder for the club in 2003 until 2005, but was unsuccessful since he was regarded as too tall and with poor technical abilities. He was bought by Czech football club Teplice from Zaljeznicar in 2005. He transferred to Czech team Usti nad Labem on a loan deal the same year. Later that year, he returned to Teplice and remained until 2007. He has 13 goals in 30 matches to his name, making him the second top goal-scorer of the Czech League in season 2006-07. His performances caught the attention of VfL Wolfsburg and signed him just in time for the start of the 2007 season. Dzeko is regarded as one of European football’s most remarkable sharp shooters, and it was in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg that the striker was hurled into international recognition. Dzeko also represented Bosnia and Herzegovina in his youth career, then made his senior debut in 2007. He holds a record of 95 caps and scored 53 goals, becoming the highest goal scorer of all time in his country.  He is known in Bosnia and Herzegovina as ‘Bosanski Dijamant,’ which means ‘Bosnian Diamond.’ This nickname was given to Edin Dzeko in 2009 after his stunning performance in a match against Belgium.

Football Career:

VfL Wolfsburg

He made his debut immediately after transferring to Wolfsburg, scoring five goals and a record of three assists in 11 appearances. He was also named the best striker during the first half of the 2007-08 Bundesliga. Dzeko finished his first season with the team, scoring eight goals and seven assists in 17 appearances.  The following season, his performances developed significantly, scoring 21 goals and 10 assists. His outstanding form was especially visible during the 10-game winning streak from February to April 2009, scoring 11 goals 1 assist.

In May of the same year, he scored his first hat-trick in a match against Hoffenheim, and again two weeks later, against Hannover 96, contributing a total of 26 goals and 10 assists in 32 appearances. He helped the team secure a title victory in the 2008-09 season. His goal record was second-best to Grafite, with whom he formed the most effective striking pair in the history of Bundesliga, along with Wolfsburg’s main assists and pass provider, Zvjezdan Misimovic, who also broke the reigning Bundesliga greatest assists by providing 20, they formed the ‘magic triangle.’ Wolfsburg finished the 2008-09 campaign as Bundesliga champions for the first time in the club’s history.

Manchester City

Dzeko signed with Manchester City in January 2011. His transfer fee was the sixth highest in the history of the Premier League at that time. He made his debut for the club during a match against Wolverhampton Wanderers where they claimed a 4-3 victory. He scored his first Premier League goal in April 2011 in a 1-0 win against Blackburn Rovers. His last goal for the season was during a match against the Bontol Wanderers, guaranteeing Man City’s third place in the Premier League. The team was also able to qualify for the group stage fixtures of the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League.

He began his second season by securing the team’s victory against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Dzeko also broke the record of becoming the first Manchester City player to notch four goals in one Premier League competition. His record earned him the Premier League Player of the Month for August. He finished the 2012-13 season with 14 goals in the Premier League and 15 across all competitions. The next season was also full of victories as Dzeko completed his last year with Manchester City.

Roma

In 2015, Edin Dzeko signed with Serie A outfit Roma. He made his Serie A debut ten days after his transfer, playing the entire game of a 1-1 draw against Hellas Verona. He started his second season with the team by scoring 8 Serie A and 10 goals across all matches. He further scored an overall total of 17 goals in 20 appearances. He scored another hat-trick during the first-leg of the Europa League fixture against Villareal which finished in a victory for Roma. In April 2017, he became the first Roma player to bag 33 goals in one season, exceeding the record of 32 goals by Rodolfo Colk and Francesco Totti combined.

In the 2017-18 season, he assisted Roma in securing a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. He was also a key player in Roma’s qualification to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals which is the club’s first in 30 years. He finished the season with 24 goals, becoming Roma’s best goal scorer, and the fifth best in the Champions League.

During the start of the 2018-19 campaign of the UEFA Champions League, he added another remarkable goal to his impressive collection when he notched the winning goal against Torino at the opening day of the season. Just recently, he scored a hat-trick in a match against Viktoria Plzen that boosted Roma’s 5-0 victory. He holds a record of eight goals in five games so far this season.
