Palermo v Udinese – Stadio Renzo Barbera at 19:45 live on BT Sport 1
I’m turning my attentions to the Serie A this Thursday evening as Palermo host Udinese at the Stadio Renzo Barbera. Both sides have had a difficult start to the season, but Udinese seem to be finding their feet under new coach, Gigi Del Neri. The Little Zebras offer some value on the Asian Handicap market and I’m expecting goals.
After a poor start to the season, Palermo did what comes naturally and sack their manager. It was Davide Ballardini’s second stint in charge of the Eagles having been hired last November and sacked two months later. To be fair to him, he lasted more than most, with a total of almost 7 months in charge. Palermo have now gone through 9 managerial changes in the last 12 months.
Roberto De Zerbi stepped in to the revolving position, and although improving performances, results are largely the same.
Palermo remain in 19th place, with just one win from their opening 9 matches. They have one of the leakiest defences in Serie A, conceding 16 times and have recorded just one clean sheet. The Sicilians have lost their last 2 league matches, shipping 4 goals against both Roma and Torino.
At the other end of the pitch, it doesn’t get much better. The Eagles average just 0.66 goals per game and have failed to score more than 1 goal in a match all season.
Despite a good recent head to head record over Udinese and home advantage, Palermo come into this match as underdogs and rightly so.
Like Palermo, Udinese recently had a change in management, bringing in the former Eagles coach, Gigi Del Neri. Unlike Palermo, things are starting to look up for the Little Zebra’s.
Udinese narrowly lost 2-1 to title favourites and league leaders Juventus on Del Neri’s debut. They then went on to defeat Pescara 3-1 thanks to a Cyril Thereau brace. Having been through somewhat of a dry spell, the French striker showed his class and should enjoy playing against Palermo’s leaky defence.
It’s early days for Del Neri and his charges still remain just above the relegation zone in 16th place. He has plenty of time to improve their league position and a win here should move them up.
The Friulani come into the match as 2.64 favourites which I think offers some value. The fact they have lost their last 3 matches to their hosts has to be why this price isn’t shorter. Also, it’s worth noting that Del Neri has not beaten Palermo as a manager in 13 attempts, losing 7 times.
Asian Handicap & Total Goals
Palermo hold the better, recent, head to head record but on current form they are going to struggle to make in 4 on the bounce. Udinese haven’t been at their best, but there a signs of real improvement in their last 2 outings.
With Cyril Thereau back amongst the goals and up against one of the worst defences in the league, Udinese are the value bet on the Asian Handicap market +/- 0 at 1.85.
I’m expecting both teams to get on the score sheet here as well. Between them, Palermo and Udinese have just 3 clean sheets from their opening 18 league matches. The attacks are likely to come out on top and I’m very surprised to see Over 2.5 goals at 2.14
Asian Handicap Recommendation: Udinese +/- 0 at 1.85 at Over 2.5 goals at 2.14
