Newcastle v Liverpool – St. James’ Park at 16:00 live on Sky Sports 1
Just one match this Sunday in the Premier League as Newcastle host Liverpool at St. James’ Park and it’s live on Sky.
Newcastle’s season has simply been awful so far and it went from bad to worse last weekend, being humiliated by Crystal Palace at Selhust Park. The 5-1 defeat was probably their worst performance of the season and I think it’s going to get worse before it gets better. To be honest I’m not sure if it will get better.
It was the Magpies 8th loss in 14 league matches, winning just twice against newly promoted Norwich and Bournemouth. Newcastle have leaked 8 goals in their last 2 matches and have kept just 3 clean sheets this term.
Steve McClaren has had just over a week to try and restore some confidence after last week’s demoralising result, but even with all the confidence in the world, I can’t see them taking anything out of this one. They are 6.0 underdogs which I still make too short.
Liverpool’s resurgence under Jurgen Klopp seem’s to be getting better all the time. It took the new boss a few matches to start improving results but the only blip since taking over was their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace at the beginning of November.
The Reds have won their last 3 in all competitions including 4-1 away win at Manchester City as well thrashing Southhampton 6-1 in the Capital One Cup quarter final on Wednesday.
Daniel Sturridge netted a brace in what was his first start after returning from injury and Divock Origi scored a hat-trick. That win made it 7 wins from 8 in all competitions, 4 of those on the road.
Liverpool are chasing their 5th straight away victory and haven’t been beaten as the away team since their 3-1 defeat by Man Utd back in September. They are 1.64 to win which looks a bit of value considering their form.
The players have all bought into Klopp’s high pressing style and the results are showing that. They have won 3 of their last away matches by 2 goals or more and I’m expecting that trend to continue on Sunday.
Liverpool -1 on the Asian Handicap betting market is 1.96 and have to be backed at that price.
Over 2.5 goals also looks a nice price at 1.80 considering Newcastle have conceded 21 time on their last 8 matches and Liverpool have scored 12 in their last 4.
I’m sticking with the bigger price for my recommendation though as I expect Liverpool to heap more misery on the Magpies.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Liverpool -1 at 1.96
