MLS Asian Handicap Previews – Sunday 29th April

New York City FC v FC Dallas

Patrick Vieira’s New York City side lost for the first time this season at Portland last week, going down 0-3. They were poor in that fixture but perhaps they were due a bad display after performing so well in 2018 so far. Nevertheless, NYC still remains at the top of the Eastern Conference and will be pleased to be back on home turf where they defend a 100% record. David Villa’s men have won 3/3 at Yankee Stadium, outscoring their opponents 8-1 in the process. This place looks like a fortress at the moment and they will be very confident heading into the game.

Dallas travels here as the only remaining unbeaten side in MLS this season. But that could change in this fixture. I’m just not sure that ‘Big D’ has been that impressive so far. They have dropped some silly points and continue to try and be all too fancy for my liking. Dallas waste too many chances, or good attacking positions with poor decision making. In right winger Michael Barrios, they have one of the best talents in MLS, but not enough of the rest of the team are consistent enough. Dallas has only played 1 of their 6 fixtures on the road. They won that in New England (1-0), but it was a fortunate success that relied a lot on the Revolution missing key chances.

I respect Dallas and have always had a soft spot for them in recent years, but in my personal opinion, this team is being left behind by other elite sides in MLS. Dallas has been moving more into the mediocre bracket and at times can be overrated. In this particular contest, I favor New York City to prevail. They are one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the whole league right now and if we allow them last week’s defeat as a bit of a ‘one-off’, then there’s an awful lot to like about them. I actually think losing at Portland could be a positive anyway, and might reset their focus. Dallas was poor away from home last season and in their lone road display in 2018, I wasn’t greatly impressed. Taking the hosts -0.75 seems to be the best way to go here.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: New York City FC -0.75 at 2.060

Los Angeles FC v Seattle Sounders

These two teams meet for the second time this season. In the previous fixture at CenturyLink Field, LAFC got off to a dream MLS debut by prevailing 1-0. It was an open game of football with a lot of chances at both ends and somehow an early goal was the difference come the final whistle. Since that opening day, LAFC has generally progressed well, whilst Seattle has struggled somewhat. Bob Bradley’s newcomers have picked up 12 points from their 6 games (all away from home) which is a pretty decent effort all things considering. They’ve scored a whopping 16 goals in that period too and certainly haven’t lacked for firepower. The likes of Rossi and Vela have looked very sharp.

This will be a special day for LAFC because it’s their first ever home match in MLS. The Banc of California Stadium is ready for action and a capacity crowd of close to 25,000 is expected. Obviously, it goes without saying that LAFC will be desperate to put on a show at their new home and collect all three points. Based on what I’ve seen so far this season, they are deserving -0.5 Asian Handicap favorites. I personally wouldn’t want to be taking that line because after all, Seattle is a perennial MLS challenge and contains a wealth of experience. However, the Sounders haven’t been great in 2018 thus far.

They beat Minnesota 3-1 last week and that was their first victory. It was an improved display, but Minnesota was really poor for an hour of that game and allowed Seattle an easy ride going up 2-0. I really feel if you put pressure on the Sounders defense then it can fold and LAFC will continually test it out with their quality attacking options. I think LAFC will win, but my preferred bet is Over 3 goals. This has all the makings of a frantic sort of end-to-end type match, especially as the crowd and atmosphere will probably be electric. It should be a great entertainment spectacle and there is enough quality in both ranks to get this line fully covered.

Asian Total Goals Betting Recommendation: Over 3 goals at 1.930
