MLS Asian Handicap Previews – Sunday 20th August

Seattle Sounders v Minnesota United

The first-ever MLS meeting between these two teams resulted in a 4-0 Sounders win on the road. That was only a couple of weeks ago, so Minnesota will hope for an improved outcome here at CenturyLink Field. The big problem for the visitors is that the defending MLS Cup champions have suddenly found some form and have almost silently moved up to second place in the Western Conference. This would’ve seemed unlikely after their sluggish start to the season but an unbeaten eight-game streak, which includes five wins have really propelled Seattle up the table. Perhaps the most impressive thing about them recently has been a string of four straight clean sheets, something very hard to obtain in this league considering the attacking nature.

As expected, Minnesota has found life difficult in their debut MLS season. Their start was so terrible that they’ve done well to gain some sort of competitiveness. In total, they’ve won 6 matches and also obtained 4 draws, which isn’t that bad all things considered. On the road they’ve been absolutely dire though and possess a 0-2-7 record, still looking for their first-ever away victory. The worrying thing in recent weeks is how easily they’ve been dominated in most fixtures. They aren’t offering as much of a threat going forwards and the opposition is easily controlling things on the field.

I’m not expecting much to change this weekend either. Seattle is right back in form and playing with a lot of confidence right now. If they can beat Minnesota 4-0 on the road, imagine the sort of damage they can do in front of their own fans? I see this ending up a comfortable home win and the Sounders on a -1.5 Asian Handicap is my pick for the match. The goal line is a whopping 3.25, but you might need Seattle to score four goals or more for this line to cover, such has been their solidity at the back recently and Minnesota’s issues hitting the back of the net. Something like 3-0 or 4-0 wouldn’t surprise me. Even if Seattle is a bit flat then they could cruise to a 2-0 win, which would still provide the desired outcome for -1.5 backers like me.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Seattle Sounders -1.5 at 1.892

New York City FC v New England Revolution

New York City FC is always a perennial team towards the top of the Eastern Conference these days. Last year they were in contention to win the division, and now again this campaign they are in the mixer. Not an awful lot has changed with Patrick Vieira’s men. They are usually one of the best teams to watch for entertainment and possess excellent attacking options. Coach, Patrick Vieira is usually positive with his approach, with the lone exception being in certain away fixtures. But that won’t be the case here facing a Revolution side they’ll expect to beat.

The New England Revs travel here with major road problems. They possess a terrible 0-3-8 record on their travels, yet to taste victory away from home this season. The main problem has been a shambolic defense which has conceded a lot of goals. Their backline is likely to come under more pressure here as NYCFC bombard them with wave after wave of attack. One positive the Revs can take heading into the match is the fact they drew here earlier in the season (2-2) and that they’ve only lost 1 of their last 6 H2H meetings facing the New York outfit. The Revolution have some decent attackers themselves and know they probably need to score at least a couple of goals if they are to get something here.

I think NYCFC will win the match and backing them on a -0.75 Asian Handicap would make some sense to a lot of people. However, their poor recent record facing the Revs puts me off. Something about them is clearly awkward for Vieira’s men. New England possesses the type of strikers who can get in behind the NYC defense which makes them potentially dangerous here. My preferred bet is to take over 3.25 goals. Both of these teams are often associated with high scoring matches and I think there will be at least four scored here. There is a slight consolation of a half loss should only three be netted. But realistically I think this will be a fairly end to end type game containing numerous chances. I see NYC winning something like 3-2, but the visitors shouldn’t be ignored completely.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Over 3.25 goals at 2.120
