Middlesbrough v Everton – Riverside Stadium at 19:45 live on Sky Sports 1

Championship side Middlesbrough host Everton at the Riverside Stadium tonight in the quarter finals of the Capital One Cup. They will be hoping for another Premier League scalp and make it to the semi finals but it’s the Toffee’s who edge favouritism.

Boro’s main aim this season is promotion to the BPL and they currently sit in 2nd position in the Championship, favourites to win the league. They spent fairly heavily during the summer, adding to an already strong squad and despite their main focus being on the league, they will certainly give it everything this evening.

Aitor Karanka’s side pulled off the shock of the last round, defeating Man Utd on penalties after a goalless draw at Old Trafford, securing their place in the quarter finals for the second time in four seasons.

Their defence is particularly strong, keeping 9 clean sheets from their 18 matches this season, conceding just 9 times. At the other end of the pitch they are also adept, scoring 27 times in the league so far this season.

They have also only conceded twice in four Capital One Cup matches and have scored 8 times. It’s understandable why the money has been coming for them today.

After a difficult season, Everton are back their best this term and will no doubt be pushing for a European spot come the end of the season. One way to secure European football is to win the league cup and that will certainly be on Roberto Martinez’s mind.

The Toffee’s have never won this competition though and are looking to make it to the semi finals for the first time since 2007-08. It’s not been an easy road for them this year having to come from behind against Barnsley and Reading before defeating Norwich on penalties in the last round.

Their league form is fairly solid, unbeaten in 4, however they let a 2 goal lead slip at the weekend, eventually drawing 3-3 with Bournemouth.

Everton’s defence has struggled this season, keeping just one clean sheet in their last 10 league outings and have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their Capital One Cup matches.

Going forward though they are in fine form, scoring 14 goals in their last 4 matches, Lukaku netting 5 times and Ross Barkley 3 times in his last 2 games.

Middlesbrough have proved they are capable of causing an upset and are good value to do so again tonight. There strong defence will have to be at it’s best to thwart the Toffee’s attack but they have enough in attack to cause Everton’s rear-guard some problems.

This should be a close one but at 2.05, Middlesbrough are the value bet +/- 0 on the Asian Handicap betting market.
