Liverpool v Southampton – Anfield at 20:00 live on Sky Sports 1
My latest Asian Handicap preview focuses on the EFL Cup 2nd leg tie between Liverpool and Southampton.
I am expecting a close game and the value looks to be on the unders market for this fixture.
Before Christmas, Liverpool were flying high and playing some great football. Since the turn of the year however, their form has considerably dropped.
They drew 2-2 at Sunderland in the Premier League, a game which they were the heavy favourites to win. The Reds then scraped through to the next round of the FA Cup, courtesy of a single goal scored by Lucas, in their second round replay against Plymouth.
Last weekend Liverpool also lost 3-2 at home to relegation bound Swansea and they come into this fixture 1-0 down to Southampton (1st leg).
Nathan Redmond’s early goal sealed the victory for The Saints in the first leg, although really Liverpool could have lost the game 3-0.
Liverpool have won only once in their last 6 games across all competitions and a run of poor results has seen them slip down to 4th in the league table.
Prior to the Swansea defeat, Klopp’s side were unbeaten in 13 games across all competitions at Anfield.
Saido Mane is proving to be a big loss due to his involvement in the African Cup of Nations, although Liverpool will be confident they can still make the FA Cup final and turn the result of the 1st leg around.
Southampton lost to Spurs, West Brom and Everton over the festive period and conceded 9 goals in the process.
However since then, The Saints have been on the up and have only lost 1 of their last 5 games across all competitions.
Claude Puel’s side now look a bit more secure in 11th in the Premier League table.
They’ve won their last 2 matches against Norwich (1-0) in the FA Cup and Leicester (3-0) in the Premier League.
The fitness of Virgil Van Dijk will be a worry for the away side however, as he was taken off against Leicester at the weekend with an ankle injury. The Saints have 3 clean sheets in their last 4 games and Van Dijk will be missed if absent.
Away from home Southampton are still struggling though and have only won 1 of their last 6 away games across all competitions.
Asian Handicap Prices and Total Goals
Liverpool are the clear favourites to win the game and with the Asian Handicap line set at -1 for an under evens return, I don’t make them value.
In the Premier League back in November, both sides drew 0-0 at St Mary’s and I am expecting another tight game with few goals.
Southampton are the second lowest away scorers in the top 14 behind Burnley and the hosts haven’t scored over 2 goals in their last 7 games.
Under 2.5 goals therefore looks value at 1.79.
Asian Handicap Recommendation: Under 2.5 goals at 2.05
