Girona v Getafe – Estadi Montilivi at 18:30 GMT live at Eleven Sports

Getafe consolidated their position in the Spanish top-flight following promotion last season with a fabulous effort, finishing eighth and only three points adrift of the European places. Head coach Jose Bordalas has built a defensively-sound and wonderfully organised outfit that masters the dark arts of the game.

Last season only Atletico Madrid and Barcelona conceded fewer goals than Los Azulones and thus far, no La Liga side has leaked fewer over their opening 16 rounds. The capital club have posted an excellent W6-D6-L4 in that sample with the Madrid minnows only losing out by more than a one-goal margin in games against regional rivals Atletico and Real Madrid.

Getafe are experts in tight tussles, and have been beaten once on their travels in 2018/19 (at the Bernabeu). Include last season and Los Azulones have lost by two or more goals in just four of their 27 games as guests with 20 (74%) concluding with fewer than three goals.

Getafe no easy meat

Los Azulones have cemented themselves in the top-half with Bordalas’ boys devilishly difficult to beat. In fact, Getafe have only suffered 17 (30%) defeats in 56 matches La Liga, seven of which came against Barca, Real or Atletico.

In 2018/19, no Spanish top-tier team are giving up as few Expected Goals from open play as Los Azulones (0.61) and their safety-first, direct and uncompromising style presents plenty of problems for opposition outfits. Bordalas’ eye for organisation always keeps the guests competitive and Getafe appeal at 1.73 with a +0.25 Asian Handicap start on Friday night.

Girona can be toppled

Girona made their La Liga debut and posted an impressive 10th-placed finish, 22 points clear of the relegation zone. Unfortunately for the Catalan club, their impressive excursions didn’t go unnoticed and head coach Pablo Machin was pinched by Sevilla in the summer with Eusebio Sacristan replacing him.

Peculiarly, the Blanquivermell lost more matches on home soil than on their travels last term and that vulnerable record at their Montilivi base has extended into this season. The hosts have lost 11 (41%) of 27 matches here since the beginning of 2017/18 with a W3-D2-L8 return against the top-half.

Obviously, Girona boasts plenty of quality attacking firepower in Christhian Stuani and Portu, but the Blanquivermell sit rock-bottom for xG from open play ratio (38%), and shots in the box ratio (36%) and are therefore easily opposed at the prices on offer for Friday night’s fixture.
