Figueirense v Vitoria – Estádio Orlando Scarpelli at 22:30

We’re approaching the midway point in the Brazilian Serie A season and on Saturday evening we have a choice of three games. We’ll be taking a look at the Figueirense vs Vitoria fixture which could have a big impact on sides at the bottom end of the table.

Fig were ripped apart in their biggest game of the season in midweek as they lost 5-0 away to Ponte Preta in their copa do brasil first leg, leaving the second leg in two weeks a foregone conclusion.

The main aim for Fig this season was always to maintain their Serie A status and then look to build on that next season. The club put a lot of money into their youth sides and are hopeful of reaping the benefits of that in the coming seasons, but they do need the money that comes with top flight football to continue that development process.

It’s been two draws back to back in the league for Figueirense and their biggest result of the season came away to title chasing Corinthians as they pulled off a fantastic 1-1 draw against a side that started the game 1.38 to beat the relegation candidates.

Saturday’s visitors, Vitoria, sit just two points outside the relegation and are currently on a six game win-less run in all competitions which has happened to include three fixtures against Cruzeiro.

In their last game Vitoria looked destined to get another point on the board against a very talented Santos side, only to be denied by an 82nd minute strike from Jean Mota. It’s been a tough one to take for Vitoria this week especially after coming from behind twice in the game.

Former Cruzeiro forward Dagoberto will start on Saturday as the lone forward in a 4-4-1-1 formation for the away side. Although Dagoberto had a lot of potential in his early days the forward, he has failed to live up to his potential and now puts in one good performance every 5/6 games.

A draw will certainly suit Vitoria more as they look to secure that 20th point. They’ll start very deep on Saturday and I expect them to slow the tempo of the game down. If the game is level around the 70th minute mark Vitoria might choose to turn to the pace of R.Ramallo who would cause problems especially if Fig are pressing high for a result.
