FA Cup Match Previews – 15th January Tuesday

Blackburn v Newcastle

Blackburn Rovers will host Premier League strugglers Newcastle United on Tuesday for the 3rd round of replays in the FA Cup. Newcastle will have to turn their focus in their Emirates Cup clash as they head for Ewood Park. They will be looking forward to driving Blackburn out of the competition. Blackburn won two of their previous 12 FA Cup fixtures against Newcastle and both of those wins came at home. However, that was during the third round of the 1927-28 and 1992-93 season.

Blackburn won their match against Millwall over the weekend, claiming the 2-0 win which left at midtable in the second tier. They were consistent in the Champions following last season’s progression from the League One and they managed to play well along the way. Their 1-1 draw at St. James Park on January 6 was a satisfactory result, one which helped Tony Mowbray’s men turn around some disappointing form in the league.

Newcastle United, on the other hand, recently lost to Chelsea on Saturday, leaving them just one point above the safety net in the English top flight. Rafa Benitez’ men are currently struggling to remain out of the drop zone. Chasing the title victory at this point may now seem hopeless for Newcastle.  The Magpies are winless in their previous six games across all competitions.

Blackburn will likely go into this match with plenty of confidence after winning two of their previous three fixtures. The trio which consists of Bradley Dack, Danny Graham, and Joe Nuttall will definitely cause a problem for Newcastle’s defence. A win is a must for Newcastle on Tuesday and they can’t afford any more failures or it’s the drop zone for them.

Luton v Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday will be travelling to Kenilworth Road on Tuesday to take on Luton Town for their FA Cup fixture. Sheffield were thrashed in the league over the weekend so they will be looking forward to win against Luton on Tuesday’s trip. They are currently struggling in the third round of the FA Cup, with caretaker manager Steve Agnew wanting to manage even a draw against Luton. Will they be able to come out successful?

Luton Town are currently doing well as proven by the 2nd spot ranking they hold in the League One. They recently concluded a 1-1 draw at Sunderland which kept them a point ahead of the latter. A return to the Championship League will be a massive improvement for Luton, but they will be aiming for a victory in the cup too. Whoever comes out as winners on Tuesday will be progressing to a live Sunday clash against top-ranked Premier League side Chelsea. It’s possible for them to come out triumphant since their form is already looking decent for a promotion.

If Sheffield manage to come out victorious in their match against Luton, it would be huge for them to make it to Stamford Bridge. However, their 3-0 thrashing against Hull City proved that they aren’t in their best form at the moment. They are currently struggling in the Championship league, with their recent away form being far from impressive. They were defeated eight times on the road so far this season, including their defeat on Saturday.

Stoke City v Shrewsbury

In the replay fixture of the FA Cup 3rd Round, Stoke City will be hosting Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday. The hosts are having another frustrating season since they haven’t managed to improve as well as secure a promotion to the top flight. Stoke City are currently placed at the bottom half of the table at 15th; however, Shrewsbury Town are no better since they are at the 18th place in the League One standings.

Shrewsbury are just above the relegation zone in the League One table, following their 3-0 disappointment against Charlton over the weekend. They can’t afford any more failures if they want to keep their spot in the third tier. Fortunately, they will be taking on a Stoke side who are winless in their previous 5 fixtures which opens an opportunity for the visitors who needs to secure a win. Luckily for the visitors, they managed to score in their last 8 matches on the road which means they could cause a threat to the vulnerable defence of Stoke City.

Despite their bad form at the moment, Stoke City are the heavily favoured team to come out as winners. Nathan Jones, who was previously at Luton, guided his Luton side to a shocking 0-0 draw at Sheffield Wednesday in the Third Round of fixtures, but now he’s expected as well to guide the hosts to a victory on Tuesday. One major issue for Stoke City is at the back since they conceded in four of their previous five matches at that spot.
