UEFA Europa League Match Previews – 20th September Thursday

RB Leipzig v Red Bull Salzburg

Austrian champions are all set to take on RB Leipzig for the first round of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Europa League in Group B competition. Both teams will face-off in high spirits and confidence following their respective home victories last weekend. German club Leipzig performed a remarkable display, easing past Hannover 96 with three goals with help from Timo Werner’s brace and an opening goal from Yussuf Poulsen. Werner was the highlight of the match during their battle with Hannover. It was Leipzig’s first Bundesliga victory this season.

The Austrian outfit’s attacking line will be quite dangerous during this match, following their line form at the beginning of the Bundesliga season. Salzburg scored a total of 18 goals in seven rounds during the domestic league so far, securing a place in the final route to the Champions League play-offs in this year’s campaign. Their defense is outstanding and by no means meticulous to this point in this season. Recently, Salzburg won the Austrian Bundesliga for the fifth consecutive time last season even though they missed a place in the Champions League after being beaten by Red Star Belgrade during the play-offs. However, they won all seven of their league games with Moanes Dabour striking four goals individually.

Both teams are hoping for to have the energy to advance deep into the tournament this season. Follow the match between RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg as it kicks off on Thursday, September 20, at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, Germany, 20:00 (UTC/GMT). This match will be the first ever head to head of both teams, and Leipzig’s first competition against the Austrian opponent. Fans should expect that the face-off between these two teams will surely be bursting with goals.

Marseille v Frankfurt

Last season’s UEFA Europa League runners-up Marseille will begin their 2018-19 European campaign with their first meeting against German Cup title holders Eintracht Frankfurt at the Stade Velodrome where they will continue their formidable performance throughout last season’s drawn-out journey. Their two previous meetings consisted of Marseille ending three home games without a victory against the German visitors. Frankfurt’s only victory during their four trips to France came last season, during a match between Bordeaux where they claimed a 1-0 victory in the 2013-14 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) League group stage competitions.

Marseille placed fourth during the Ligue 1 tournaments last season, securing a return to the UEFA Europa League. The French club had ten UEFA Europa League matches at home last campaign, and came out victorious in 9 of them. Their only loss was against Salzburg during the league’s group stage.  Frankfurt’s only European participation was during the 2013-14 season when they came out successful in negotiating the UEFA Europa League play-offs and group stage before going to Porto in the 32nd round. However, the German team was able to secure their first European campaign in 5 years following the dramatic 2017-18 season when they triumphed against Bundesliga champions Bayern Munchen in the German Cup final. Their victory also paved the way for their first major silverware in 30 years.

Both teams are hoping to come out successful in this year’s campaign. Catch the anticipated match between these two title holders on Thursday, September 20, at the Stade Velodrome Stadium in Marseille, France, 17:55 (UTC/GMT).

FC Copenhagen v Zenit St. Petersburg

Regular contenders in the UEFA Europa League successfully came through the qualifying rounds, although not without facing a challenge. Their victory during the qualifying phase secured the opening of their Group C campaign with an exciting first match in the Danish capital. Both teams have a positive all-time record against their respective opponents from another country.  Zenit is undefeated In their four games against Danish teams. Copenhagen are boasting three wins against the Russian opponent, despite being defeated during their most recent encounter with Lokomotiv Mokosva on matchday five of last season’s group stage.

Copenhagen was unseated as Danish champions last season, missing out on a third consecutive title and failing to secure an 18th European campaign. However, they are one of the only four clubs that have been able to reach the UEFA Europa League group stage after starting their season in the first qualifying round. The Danish outfit is taking part in their sixth European League group stage competition, advancing twice before. Their most recent competition was during last season when they lost in the 32nd round to Atletico Madrid. Though they advanced to one round further in the 2016-17 season.

This season is the Russian outfit’s third consecutive appearance in the Europa League group stage. They were able to qualify for the knockout rounds on every occasion. They reached the 16th round last season before being defeated by RB Leipzig. Zenit was in the fifth place during the 2017-18 Russian Premier League. Zenit might have lost their previous four European away games, but their record for the UEFA Europa League group stage is W7 D1 L1.

Don’t miss out the match between these two teams on Thursday, September 20, at the Parken Stadium in Denmark, 20:00 (UTC/GMT).
