Besiktas v Malmo
Besiktas were able to create a stellar comeback as they won against Sarpsborg on matchday five that put the former in a fortunate position to qualify in their final fixture as they end their UEFA Europa League Group I campaign with a match in their home turf against Malmo. The Swedish outfit must win against Besiktas in order to eliminate them and reach the 32nd round.
Besiktas will be coming into this match knowing that a victory for them would secure a place in the knockout stages, and any result aside from a win would leave them in danger of parting the competition early. They will be hoping to dominate the Swedish side in order to make up for the two goals they lost when they met in Sweden. However, their chances of advancing against their opponents looked pretty slim but it’s possible that they might come out successful following their victory at Sarpsborg.
Malmo, on the other hand, have a strong record against their opponents which could be a confidence booster in their quest for success in their match against Besiktas. A victory for the Swedish team would immediately send them into the Europa League knockout rounds. Malmo won three of their previous five meetings against Besiktas and are unbeaten in their two Istanbul fixtures. Although they are quite underwhelming in terms of their performance due to their lack of consistency, they’re still in a place to proceed to the next round.
Malmo need to come out victorious in the Turkish capital on Thursday if they want to qualify for the next round. They gathered three draws on the spin in the Europa League so far and each of these fixtures saw them score goals. Besiktas, in the meantime, clinched to the fourth place in the Super Lig table after a slow start to the new season, winning two and drawing one in their past three domestic league matches.
Lazio v Eintracht
Eintracht Frankfurt will be coming into Thursday’s match in Rome, looking forward in completing a perfect group stage record of six wins in six games as they visit Lazio on the final matchday of the Europa League. Lazio’s Europa League campaign is nearing its end this week, with the Serie A side already through in the last 32. They secured the second place in the standings but still can’t quite surpass leaders Eintracht Frankfurt.
Lazio do not need to pick up three points but they do need a win since their recent performance saw them slip out of the top four in the Serie A standings. They conceded a late goal in their weekend draw with Sampdoria which left them out of the Champions League position in the Serie A in a season where they could have been successful in their race to the top four finish. Their poor form at the moment had kept them unable to move past other teams in order to secure a place in the top of the standings so they will really need a victory on Thursday’s fixture.
On the other hand, Eintracht Frankfurt will be heading to Rome in quite a confident mood after securing five wins in five matches in Europe so far this season. They were also able to hit form in the league which left them in a resilient position. The German side notched up a record of competition’s highest 15-goal tally alongside Salzburg and Sevilla respectively. These two sides have not yet encountered each other in previous years. Their recent meeting was during a 4-1 victory for Frankfurt over Lazio in early October.
Stadio Olimpico should expect the hosts to focus on how they can improve their poor run in order to avoid the drop zone. However, the visitors are also looking forward in continuing their undefeated run in Europe. Who will come out victorious between these two?
RB Leipzig v Rosenborg
RB Leipzig will be looking forward for a victory against Rosenborg on matchday six to complete their part in the bid for the runners up position in the Group B fixtures of this year’s UEFA Europa League. RB Leipzig will also need group leaders Salzburg to dominate the Celtic in Glasgow to overtake the Bhoys at the second spot.
This season isn’t exactly great for Leipzig in Europe at the moment though their opponents on Thursday could have asked for a better match to end the group stage fixtures on. Their fate in the competition may ultimately rests in Celtic’s hands but they have the ability to give themselves the best possible opportunity by dominating a vulnerable Rosenborg side.
Meanwhile, Rosenborg are currently at the bottom of the group table, struggling to go through in the final third. They conceded a total of 13 goals in five of their previous matches and scored just three. When Rosenborg went to Salzburg earlier in the group, they also conceded three goals. If the hosts manage to display dominance on Thursday, the visitors could really struggle and should be cautious.
When these two teams encountered each other during the reverse fixture, Leipzig displayed quite an impressive performance which turned out to be their best in the tournament so far in their campaign. They managed to control the game in full domination and created plenty of opportunities to score goals. A repeat of that performance is expected to show up on Thursday’s match against the Norwegian side. RB Leipzig are the favourites in this match considering their form as compared to their opponents. However, this doesn’t mean they will come into this game in full confidence since the German club lost three of their previous four games throughout the competition.
