Corinthians v Vasco Asian Handicap Preview – Thursday 30th July

Corinthians v Vasco – Arena Corinthians at 02:00

A top vs bottom clash takes place in tonight’s Brazilian Serie A action as second placed Corinthians host third from bottom Vasco. Corinthians can go top of the table with a win this evening provided they pick up the three points and current table toppers Atletico MG drop points at home to Sao Paulo.

Vasco were humbled at home to Palmeiras on Sunday evening as they fell to a curshing 4-1 defeat which led to large portions of the crowd booing the Vasco players and management staff throughout the later stages of the game. With both Rio based clubs Flamengo and Fluminense going for top half finishes this season it’s difficult for Vasco to accept that they’re currently the worst side in their state in the division something they’ve not been used to over the years.

If you take out Vasco’s last away game which was a 2-1 win over their local rivals Fluminense you have a team that has only scored one away goal in their other seven away fixtures and have only picked up one point. After their recent derby day triumpth the Vasco faithful will head into this game with a lot more belief than they would a couple of weeks ago but with Dagoberto potentially missing through a groin strain that would take away their major attacking threat.

As usual and as expected Corinthians have the best defensive record in the division having conceded just nine goals in their opening 15 games, it’s a luxery for them knowing that if they manage to score a goal the likelyhood is that they’ll pick up the three points. Timao have gone five wins from five in their five Serie A fixtures at home seeing off sides such as Internacional and Atletico MG.

The Corinthians coaching staff seemed to have done the near impossible which is to bring the best out of former CSKA Moscow and Flamengo striker Vagner Love. He may only have three goals in his twelve appearances to date but his performances have been excellent and his off the ball movement seems to have become as sharp as when he plyed his trade in Russia. It’s difficult to see how Corinthians don’t comfortably win tonight.
