Dortmund v Man City – Universiade SportsStadium, Shenzhen at 12:30 live on Sky Sports 1
Manchester City continue their preparations for the new Premier League season, just 17 days away, against Borussia Dortmund at the Universiade Sports Stadium in Shenzhen today at lunchtime.
Quite surprisingly, the Citizens are priced up at a short 2.76 to win this International Champions Cup match despite having played just one friendly so far this summer.
Pep Guardiola’s only game in charge saw them lose 1-0 to his former side, Bayern Munich more than a week ago. They were due to face rivals Man Utd in this competition on Monday, but the match was called off due to the state of the pitch.
Man City will also be without arguably last season’s best player, Kevin de Bruyne who is being given an extended rest after the European Championships. Sergio Aguero, Joe Hart, Nicolas Otamendi and Raheem Sterling have all now joined the rest of the squad in China, but due to the cancellation of Monday’s match in Beijing, all are without any match practice.
Guardiola fielded a side full of youth players against Bayern Munich and I’m expecting a similar line-up today with some of the bigger names getting some minutes under their belt at some point.
Unlike City, Dortmund’s pre-season started 5 matches ago, their latest fixture, a 4-1 demotion of Man Utd last Friday to kick off the International Champions Cup. It was their 4th win in 5 and momentum will be with the Bundesliga runners up.
BVB lost 3 key senior players this Summer, with Mats Hummels, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Ilkay Gundogan all leaving the club, the latter joining Man City. They have however managed to keep the services of Eric-Pierre Aubameyang, Sebastian Weigl and Marco Reus which is a good news for the club.
Thomas Tuchel has also done a fantastic job during the transfer window so far, bringing in some quality youthful talent. Raphael Guerreiro, Marc Bartra, Sebastian Rode, Emre Mor and Ousmane Dembele all have joined the club as they look to go one better than last season and lift their first Bundesliga title in 5 years.
Dormund are a quality side and I expect them to be challenging Bayern in the league and to have a decent Champions League this season. If this were a competitive match mid-way through the season I would expect City to be even shorter favourites, but with BVB having had more match practice and Guardiola still getting to know his players, the German side are the value bet on the Asian Handicap betting market here.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Borussia Dortmund +/- 0 at 1.94
