Atletico MG v Ponte Preta – Estadio Independencia at 15:00
We’re eight rounds into the Brazilian Serie A season and it’s been nothing short of a dreadful start for teams from Minas Gerais with three of the regions clubs taking up three of the four relegation places.
On Sunday we’ll be taking a look at 18th placed Atletico MG against 8th placed Ponte Preta, with just one win from their opening eight games all the pressure is already on MG as their season threatens to get away from them.
MG travelled to face Inter on Thursday evening and it was a very humbling experience for Galo who were comfortably beat 2-0 and in all honesty, it could have comfortably been more.
If Galo fail to beat Ponte you have to think that they’ll be facing a relegation battle for the rest of the campaign, it’s been a rapid fall from grace for the previous Copa Libertedores champions.
On the other hand, Ponte Preta have started the season magnificently well and added another three points to their total on Wednesday evening with a 3-2 victory over Atletico PR.
Ponte have picked up six points from their last two games and they’ll come into this game full of confidence knowing that if they perform to the best of their ability then there’s every chance they could come away with three points here.
I expect Ponte to play 5-3-1-1 as they look to flood the midfield in an attempt to control the tempo of the game especially early on. Should Ponte be successful at this it should set the game up nicely for them as the Galo faithful will get on their teams back making an already poisoned atmosphere even worse.
Should Ponte manage to pick up the three points for a third game running there’s a good chance they could be sitting inside the top four come Sunday evening.
Galo are way too short for me here especially having only won one game so far this season!
