Athletic Bilbao v Getafe – San Mamés at 11:00 GMT live at Eleven Sports
Twelve games into the La Liga season, just four points separate the top-six and eight points separate the top-12 teams. Minnows Alaves and unfancied Espanyol are within striking distance of the summit after almost a third of the campaign, whilst more traditional heavyweights are struggling for form.
Athletic Bilbao may not be considered seasoned title challengers but the Basque giants are in unchartered territory at the wrong end of the standings. Les Leones’ gut-wrenching last-minute 3-2 loss to Atletico Madrid in their last outing before the international break has left the club outside the drop zone on goal difference.
Head coach Eduardo Berizzo – who only arrived in the summer to plenty of fanfare – is now under serious pressure to hold on to his position following a return of just one win from 12 matches. Seven of those encounters ended all-square as Bilbao haven’t tasted victory since the opening weekend.
Les Leones have only once silenced their opposition, with a lack of goals suffocating any progress. Athletic have notched more than a solitary strike themselves on four occasions and now face a make-or-break match-up against a hardened Getafe side that will relish upsetting their rhythm at San Mames.
Getafe awkward opposition
Getafe consolidated their position in the Spanish top-flight following promotion last season with a fabulous effort, finishing eighth and only three points adrift of the European places. Head coach Jose Bordalas has built a defensively-sound and wonderfully organised outfit that masters the dark arts of the game.
Last season only Atletico Madrid and Barcelona conceded fewer goals than Los Azulones and thus far, only three teams have leaked fewer over their opening 12 outings. The visitors have posted an equal W4-D4-L4 in that sample with only the capital giants running out winners by more than a one-goal margin.
Getafe are experts in tight tussles, and have been beaten once on their travels in 2018/19. Include last season and the Madrid minnows have lost by two or more goals in just four of their 25 games as guests with 18 (72%) concluding with fewer than three goals. They’ll follow that familiar blueprint here.
The betting angle
However, there’s little appeal in punting Under 2.5 Goals below the 1.60 mark so instead, we should focus our attention on supporting Getafe with a +0.50 Asian Handicap start. Taking this angle will see us in profit should Los Azulones avoid defeat at San Mames in the early Sunday kick-off.
Looking at the two teams’ respective home/away records since the beginning of last season and this selection would have won in 35/50 (70%) fixtures, making the 1.82 available a great value angle to support.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Getafe +0.50 at 1.820
