Alaves v Celta Vigo – Mendizorroza at 17:30 GMT live at Eleven Sports
Celta Vigo are in freefall in Spain. Los Celestes have slipped to 17th in the La Liga standings, a solitary point above the relegation zone after losing seven of their last eight games, including last weekend’s thumping 4-1 home defeat to Levante.
The Galician club boast the division’s worst defensive record and were ripped apart at the seams last Saturday. The performance was so poor that the local press summed it up in apocalyptic terms: Celta were “bleeding”, an “open wound”, a “shipwreck,” “pathetic”, “depressing”.
Fans called for the president Carlos Mourino to resign, whilst manager Miguel Cardoso continues to flounder. Since taking over from Tony Mohamed in November, Celta have picked up only 10 points in 12 games and the Vigo-based side are now Spain’s worst performers this calendar year.
To make matters worse, captain, top goalscorer and lynchpin Iago Aspas injured himself in the warm up on his return from six weeks out. Without Aspas in the side, Celta have won just once in two years – apart from Lionel Messi, there is certainly no player upon whom so much responsibility is loaded in La Liga.
Mourino was also without Maxi Gomez at Balaidos and his blunt forwardline has been overshadowed by their wretched, chaotic and unorganised backline. Celta have shipped 17 goals in their last eight games and they look easily opposable against Alaves on Saturday evening.
Alaves can avoid defeat
Los Celestes have W2-D2-L7 on their travels this term, conceding at least twice in nine of those 11 outings. Overall in 2018/19, Celta have won just six games and they’re certainly not going to be in for an easy ride at Mendizorrotza where Alaves have returned W14-D5-L4 under Abelardo’s leadership.
So the 1.70 available on Alaves in the +0 Asian Handicap market is simply too good to ignore. The hosts rarely excel in the performance data rankings but their clinical and efficient game-plan based around fast and direct counter-attacks can cause this Celta side plenty of problems.
The home side from Vitoria have claimed a 66% win rate here under Abelardo and find themselves one point shy of the top-four and Champions League qualification after a remarkable campaign. Real Madrid have already been beaten ‘to nil’ here and Alaves have suffered a sole defeat at Mendizorrotza this term.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Alaves DNB at 1.700
