Why are these European football giants struggling this season?

A wobbly 2018-2019 Season

Accomplishing consistency in the world of football is by no means an easy task. To reach a level of continuous greatness, it requires a lot of hard work, determination and resilience. European football is home to some of the biggest clubs in the world of football. These teams have a history of dominating countless of matches and stadiums for decades or at least consistent in contending year and year out.

Only the greatest teams have the ability to showcase an impressive feat consistently through the years and it is because of experience and a long record of triumph that eventually transforms them into becoming the biggest names in the football scene.

However, even the best of the best can be struck by a loss of a once remarkable form. The 2018-2019 season hasn’t been going well for five of the biggest clubs in Europe with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Roma, and Monaco all struggling so far this season due to a lack of consistency in what were once the teams that always show a stellar display.

AS Monaco

Finishing as Champions in the 2016-17 season and at second last term in the Ligue 1, AS Monaco are now on the bottom of the standings at 19th, winning just three out of the 16 matches they played. Last season, Monaco just lost six times in the Ligue 1 throughout the entire competition. This time, their awful form has continued ever since the beginning of the campaign. It is a lost cause for the French side in the Champions League either, losing 5 and drawing 1 in six of their last fixtures in the group A. It has been a disappointing campaign for a team that was expected to be one of the best.

Manchester United

It’s been several seasons since Manchester United were a real threat in the football scene, especially in the Premier League. They have been going through a tough time ever since Sir Alex Ferguson retired and when Jose Mourinho was given the task of handling the team ahead of the 2016-2017, Manchester United were once again expected to become Champions of England. Instead of wins, United’s present season has been tainted with several controversies and scorching displays on the field. The Red Devils are currently seated at 7th place in the Premier League table with 26 points, a huge 16 points behind the leading Liverpool side.

AS Roma

After a third place finish in the Serie A last season and reaching the UEFA Champions League semifinals, AS Roma was supposed to be one of the teams included in the race for a title victory this season. However, Roma’s campaign has been unsuccessful in dominating in the Serie A at the moment. Things aren’t going quite the way they expected since they are currently at 7th place in the league standings, winning just five of their previous 13 match played so far. They lost 4 of their last fixtures and are currently 18 points behind league leaders Juventus.

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich won their sixth consecutive Bundesliga title last season but things aren’t looking up for the German heavyweights this season. Although they are currently in a strong position in the Champions League, they are nine points behind the undefeated leaders Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga standings at the 3rd spot. Since winning last season’s title by a massive 21 points, Bayern won their four opening matches under new boss Niko Kovac. However, they are now on a run of four winless fixtures in all competitions, also losing a devastating 3-0 at home against Borussia Monchengladbach just before the most recent international break.

Real Madrid

Any club in the world will really have a hard time coping with one of the best players in the world leaving the team. When the manager who has also won previous three back-to-back Champions League titles leaves as well, things became more challenging. When Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid to join Serie A side Juventus, and with Zinedine Zidane leaving as well, everyone expected Real Madrid to flop and it is proven by a number of losses this season. As of the moment, Real Madrid are currently 4th in the La Liga table with 26 points in 15 matches played. They are also 5 points behind rivals Barcelona FC who currently top the league standings.
