Talisca’s journey to China
Despite being linked with a host of European football’s finest clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and AS Roma, Anderson Talisca opted to move to Chinese powerhouse, Guangzhou Evergrande.
Having spent the last two years on loan at Besiktas from Benfica, where he’s been one of the stars of the Super Lig on his way to scoring 27 goals and supplying nine assists in 55 league matches for the club, the Brazilian resisted the overtures of the aforementioned giants to accept Evergrande’s offer.
It can comfortably be assumed the 24-year-old will be paid handsomely by the team managed by Fabio Cannavaro, for Manchester United reportedly put in a bid of £35 million for his services, apparently the same as Evergrande, only for the player to choose the Southern China Tigers.
Intriguingly, the player himself even recently spoke to Globo Esporte of his desire to join the Red Devils and work under Jose Mourinho, who’s been a long time admirer of Talisca, explaining: “Of course. Every player wants it [to join Manchester United]. I had a good season. And like you said, this love from him [Mourinho] is old, I also like his work, he’s a great manager. And I hope everything goes right.”
An enormously gifted attacking midfielder, the languid, 191cm playmaker will unquestionably be a huge asset for his new side, with his technical quality, astute movement, strength and athleticism sure to be a hit.
An incisive passer who uses great imagination in his distribution, he breaks lines, unlocks backlines and switches the angle of attacks incisively through his aptitude and confidence in this regard. Moreover, his assured dribbling only amplifies his quality, where his skill, plus his rapid changes of pace and direction, see him pose a dynamic, unpredictable threat in 1v1 scenarios.
Always on the lookout for spaces to exploit, he’s excellent at finding free space in front of opposition defences, pushing out wide to create overloads and dropping deep to assist in build-up play, which all combines to enhance his contribution.
Capable of operating out wide too, his versatility and capacity to work in numerous zones on the pitch will serve his new manager nicely, allowing him to use him in a variety of ways.
By the numbers, his averages from last season of four shots per 90 minutes, 3.95 successful dribbles p90, 3.54 won aerial duels p90 and his 6.58 completed passes into the final third p90 illustrate his quality wonderfully.
Although he’s got some question marks over his attitude, Guangzhou Evergrande’s capture of the enigmatic Talisca is yet another example of the pull of the Chinese Super League.
