Getafe v Malaga – Coliseum Alfonso Pérez at 19:45 Live at Sky Sports
Workaholic head coach Jose Bordalas made Getafe one of the most streetwise sides in the Segunda last season and Los Azulones are following the same path to success in the top-flight this term.
The Madrid minnows may not win many prizes for aesthetics, but they get through the miles and rarely give their opponents a moment’s rest. Hard-working, direct and rugged, they’re an uncomfortable test that few teams have relished playing against since promotion.
Last weekend Getafe fell to their first reverse by more than a solitary strike this season and it was ironic it came against city rivals Atletico. Los Azulones are arguably the most similar side, in terms of style and approach, to Atleti and Bordalas admitted his team just failed to cope with the physicality.
Getafe strong home operators
So whilst Getafe struggled being bullied, they’ll relish putting the boot on the other foot and returning to action on Friday night to be the bullies, especially so at their Coliseum Alfonso Perez home.
A quirk of the fixture list meant the hosts have welcomed six of the top seven teams in La Liga to their base on the southern outskirts of the capital. Despite that devilishly difficult run, Getafe has garnered five victories from their nine overall home matches, including wins against the likes of Valencia and Villarreal.
Indeed, their only defeats here have been narrow losses against Barcelona, Real Madrid and Sevilla. Alaves and Las Palmas are the only bottom-six sides to visit Getafe and both were beaten convincingly, by an aggregate 6-1 so Bordalas’ boys should be confident of putting away La Liga’s worst travellers here.
Malaga in a mess
On Monday night Malaga suffered a 1-0 loss on home soil to Espanyol. It was their third defeat without scoring and left Los Boquerones sitting joint-rock bottom of the table. The Andalusian side has been beaten in 13 of their 18 matches this term and head coach Michel is on the brink.
With the visitors having lost on eight of their nine away days already this campaign, it’s difficult to see Malaga ending that rotten run on Friday night. Los Boquerones appeared devoid of ideas or confidence against Espanyol and have enjoyed only three days rest in the build-up to the contest.
