Benevento v Milan – Stadio Ciro Vigorito at 11:30 Live at BT Sport
AC Milan was held to a 0-0 draw at home to Torino on Sunday. The Rossoneri fired in twice as many shots – and put three times as many on-target but a combination of poor finishing plus fine goalkeeping denied the Italian giants.
An audience of 54,000 people jeered at the conclusion as Milan failed to score for their fourth consecutive Serie A game at San Siro. It was only their time in the club’s history they’ve fired blanks in four matches on the spin as hosts and saw head coach Vincenzo Montella sacked in the morning.
It wasn’t a huge surprise. Despite enjoying varying degrees of success with Catania, Fiorentina and Milan, Montella has struggled to integrate the Rossoneri’s influx of summer stars. Milan has played 23 games across all competitions, without ever retaining the same starting XI from one to the next.
However, Montella’s major downfall has been their poor form. Already 11 points adrift of fourth and Champions League qualification, Milan are nine points worse off than they were at the corresponding stage last season having claimed top honours in only two of their last nine outings.
Benevento hope to pile more misery on Milan
Club legend Gennaro Gattuso has been promoted from the youth team to take charge of the side and he’ll be hoping to make his mark on Sunday. And according to the league standings, Milan could hardly have had more accommodating hosts for his first game in charge.
The Serie A newcomers extended their unwanted European record for losing all 14 fixtures to begin a new season when going down 1-0 at Atalanta on Monday night but the Witches once again put in a solid performance, worthy of more.
Indeed, nine of Benevento’s 14 losses have arrived by one-goal margins, including four of their last five. Twelve of their 34 goals conceded have arrived in the final half hour and six from the 75th minute onwards – on several occasions the club from Campania have been denied at the death.
Although the Witches still rank as Serie A’s rock-bottom side when viewing Expected Goals and Expected Points, the home side’s performances have been worthy of at least eight points according to the data.
Although top-flight survival now looks beyond Benevento, don’t expect the minnows to rollover on Sunday. Instead, support the beleaguered underdogs with a +1.5 start on the Asian Handicap line at 1.85.
