Avai currently sit fourth in the table and in the last promotion place. They only occupy this spot on goal difference and therefore there’s a big chance that this is going to go down to the last few games of the season.
On Friday evening Avai will host Paysandu with the travelling side eight points outside the relegation zone. They look almost certain to survive this season which will be a success for the club. Paysandu are usually excellent at home, but it’s their away form that keeps them in the bottom half.
At the start of September it looked like Avai were destined for a mid table finish. Four wins in a row rocketed them up to second place and has given them a fantastic opportunity to secure promotion to the Brazilian top flight.
Last week Avai travelled to Joinville. Although Joinville are usually decent at home, they’ve struggled in large parts this season and now sit inside the relegation zone. After a very hard fought game, Avai managed to come away with the three points that kept them in fourth.
It seems likely that there are now only two promotion places up for grabs with Vasco and Atletico GO running away with the top two places, with the main question now being which one of the two will win the win the league?
Paysandu will know that should they maintain their current home record, then they’ll stay in the division and they don’t really have much motivation to do anything other than that. Personally, I can’t see them winning another away game this season, especially after their last three away games, where they’ve picked up zero points.
